More about My Children's and Teen Yoga Classes

I am fortunate that I have been asked to teach children's yoga at a couple of local schools and now at the Central Library in downtown San Diego. If you are an elementary school, preschool, un-schooling group, home school group, daycare center, girl scout troupe, middle school, high school, or a family with children from 2-7, 8-13 or 14+, please call me to discuss how we can create a yoga class to suit their needs! For younger children my style incorporates music, books, and crafts into yoga-oriented play, where I help them learn how to energize and calm with breath. We learn about the Big Three B's - body, brain and breathing - and how using them in unison creates YOGA. One of the favorite and most fun classes is where the children get the opportunity to "teach" demonstrating, vocalizing, and assisting their peers. I have seen them discover, to their own delight, how very capable, focused and good they are in this role, whatever their physical ability level. I belie...

10 messages your body may be sending you on your mat

Yes yes a thousand times yes. I have these same messages going thru my head 9 years into my practice and hear them all every day. Teachers, please know how to help your students with these BASICS - your help with fundamentals (not just how to get into visvamitrasana http://www.yogajournal.com/practice/2149 ) will help them further their practice on and off the mat...and isn't THAT why we teach??? http://www.yoganonymous.com/10-messages-your-body-may-be-sending-you-on-the-mat-are-you-listening/

ByomYoga on Facebook

Lately it has been easier to update the BYOM Facebook page with shared links, short message and pictures than this blog, so please always check here for new info. The Google Calendar at right will always be updated with my latest classes, but the Facebook format allows me to do quick updates with new info and gives you a broader view of what's going on. LIKE my page, and you can friend me Jackie (Kurtz) Gadd as well! https://www.facebook.com/byomyoga

Talking to the Forage Folks

After watching the video of my presentation at the 2012 Ancestral Health Symposium, Nancy remarked that it seemed like I was more nervous talking about the forage agronomy topics than I am when I deliver purely dietary presentations. I agree. It may be that I hadn't been studying the forage material for a while, so I was conscious of being certain that I actually said what I wanted to say. It could have been, too, that I was expecting that audience to be a challenging one. I was very pleased with the response, however. And I'll be giving another presentation this August in Atlanta at the 2013 Ancestral Health Symposium!  I see my role, in part, as standing between the low carb/Primal/Paleo communities and the livestock agriculture communities. It's my hope that they can begin speaking to each other and learning from each other. I've had the opportunity to present counter-establishment dietary information at the 2012 and 2013 annual meetings of the American Fora...

How Family Yoga Changed my Day (week, year, life)

This morning I woke up grumpy. Those of you that have spent morning time with me know I actually LOVE mornings. But not today. Eli has me up three times last night, each time from a DEEP sleep, for things that I began to resent. Mama? Yes Eli. MAAAAAAAAma!!!! YEEEEEEEEEES Eli? Please put the covers back on me! Do it yourself Honey-Bun. (whining, sleepily) NOOOOO you do it for me!! (Of course, I get up and do it). I'm back in bed in 60 seconds. Phew. MAMA! (ignore) MAAAAAMAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT honey? Please bring me some juice. (I wait hoping he just goes back to sleep). (now I have to go to the bathroom) MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I'm in the potty Eli. (WHHHHHHHINE) I want some juiiiiiiiiiiice. In a minute WHIIIIIIIIIIIINE WHIIIIIIIIIIIIINE (I deliver said juice) MAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaa What's wrong Eli? Please take my cup. Just put it down. I CAN'T. Yes you can. (clunk) I DID IT. Good job. Night Night night night Eli. NIGHT NIGHT. I said goodnight Eli. NIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT NIIIIIIIIIIII...

Poses - It's the IDEA, not the IDEAL

Photographs courtesy of Kyle Murphy In August of 2012 I decided to take a leap and get professional yoga photographs taken...meaning the person behind the camera was a pro, and I'd do poses, but the outcome was left to chance. I make no claim that my alignment is perfect, but I do know that I was trying my best to follow my own knowledge, plus the cues of the patient instructor/coach there. Your poses may (will) look different, but out of sheer humility (to prove that it's the IDEA of the pose, not the IDEAL) I thought I'd unveil these, with the pose names in English and Sanskrit. Eventually I will add my own pose notes like how to get into them, how to make your own adjustments, and how to move out of them. Enjoy, offer me feedback, Pin, or whatever you please. Parivrtta Anjanyasana - Revolved Lunge Pose with palms together at the heart in Namaste Mudra (also can be considered a modification of Pavritta Parsvakonsana - Revolved Side Angle) (Eka Pada) Setu Banda Sarvangasan...
